Paul Merson slams Manchester United stars after Chelsea loss

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has slammed Manchester United’s decision to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea.

Manchester United paid £50 million to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea in the summer, after the midfielder pushed for a move away from Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old joined the Red Devils before taking part in a training session under Xabi Alonso.

The midfielder has now been at his best since moving to Old Trafford, and had a match to forget against Chelsea on Saturday, October 31. He also went viral on social media after his role in the Morgan Rogers goal in the second half.

Paul Merson spoke about the midfielder and Manchester United‘s other signings, saying they made terrible decisions in the summer. The Arsenal legend added that they have no legs in the midfield and said:

“The midfield they bought – I’d love to see what they saw paying £50m for Andre Santos. Tell me what you saw that I didn’t when I was watching him every week at Chelsea. Youri Tielemans, he’s a good player but there’s no legs around him in the team.”

“He had legs around him when he was playing at Villa. How do I know there’s no balance in the midfield they’ve bought and they don’t? Two years ago, you’re looking at Casemiro and saying he’s a million miles off it. Now you look at it and think they miss him.”

Merson is not sure that they have done enough to rebuild the midfield and does not understand their plans to focus on the defence next summer. He said:

“And now they say they’ll work on the defence in the next window. It’s madness – you can’t build a house on a puddle. You just can’t. Why not start with the defence first and then go from there? They say they’re going to go and outscore teams but they haven’t bought players who score enough goals.”

Manchester United are 17th in the Premier League table, level on points with 18th-placed Crystal Palace. They are also just two points above bottom-placed Sunderland.
