“Heโs going through a difficult period” – Wayne Rooney delivers verdict on Erik ten Hag amid Manchester United sack rumors
Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to stick with Erik ten Hag amid reports of a possible sack. He believes the Dutchman is a fantastic manager and hopes things can be turned around.
The Plymouth Argyle manager has stated that Ten Hag is doing everything he can to improve things at Manchester United. He added that the club has changed a number of players in the last few years, and that is one reason things have not gone smoothly.
Speaking to the media, Rooney claimed that the Red Devils cannot keep changing managers and start the rebuild. He said:
โWell thatโs obviously down to the owners of the football club to look at that. Iโm sure Erik Ten Hag is a fantastic manager. Heโs won trophies wherever heโs been and won trophies at Man United as well. So yes, heโs going through a difficult period and I think heโd probably say that himself. But you hope he can turn it around because too often managers lose their jobs and then itโs another rebuild with a different manager.โ
The former English striker admitted that his former side cannot be 14th in the Premier League and wants to see things improve. He added:
โI think itโs difficult and anyone would admit that Man United want to be challenging for titles, so to be 14th, Iโm sure everyone at the club knows they need to improve on that. I know Erik Ten Hag is doing everything he can to try and improve that. Players again, and I said this last season, need to do better than what theyโre doing. Thereโs a big turnaround of players over the last few years. You just want to see them challenging again.โ
Thomas Tuchel has been linked with the Old Trafford job, while Graham Potter and Gareth Southgate have also been reported as targets for the club.
