Unai Emery slams Arsenal stars for poor attitude
Arsenal news: Unai Emery has slammed some of the star players at his former club, Arsenal, for their poor attitude during his tenure. Emery was roped in by the Gunners as a replacement for Arsene Wenger in the summer of 2018.
Despite a positive first season under their new manager, Arsenal looked to have stagnated under Emery’s leadership this past season and embarked on their worst winless run since 1992.
That prompted the board to terminate Emery’s deal and the club has since recovered under the guidance of Mikel Arteta. Emery, however, believes his tenure with the Gunners was not a failure and that he managed to steady a sinking ship.
He also explained that the club were in turmoil when he was handed the job and he would have needed a lot more time to transform them into title contenders. Emery also slammed the attitude of some of the Arsenal players, claiming they refused to buy into his system and did not give their all for the club.
Speaking to France Football, Emery said: “Arsenal was a club on a downward slope for two years when I arrived. We stopped that slide and even started to straighten the club out.”
“We had Champions League qualification in our hands and it went wrong at the end. But it was a good season and we had the idea to continue this progress.
“We were missing personalities for this season to stay on track, and some stars did not have the right attitude and asked for more than they gave.”
Emery was sacked just 18 months into his tenure and his replacement, Mikel Arteta, has been credited with reviving the club’s fortunes, although the Gunners have managed just three wins in nine games under the Spaniard.
