Sources: Chelsea scouting goalkeeper to challenge Kepa Arrizabalaga
Chelsea news: The future of Kepa Arrizabalaga has been the talking point among the Chelsea fans this season. Several fans are keen on seeing him replaced in the summer but that seems unlikely to happen right now.
Sources have informed Nitwik Football that Frank Lampard is aware of his goalkeeper’s poor form this season but is not willing to change the #1 straight away. Instead, the Chelsea have instructed the scouts to get a qualified replacement in place for Willy Caballero.
The Argentine’s contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the season. He has already revealed that he is keen on a move back to Spain this summer.
The plan at Chelsea now is not to sign an experienced keeper who is at the end of his career to be a backup to Kepa. Sources have told Nitwik Football that Lampard wants a keeper who can challenge for the #1 spot.
Selling Kepa is an unrealistic option right now as he was signed for a world-record fee. Chelsea know that they will not get anything close to that fee right now and are not willing to cash in.
Moreover, the faith in Kepa is not all lost and the Spaniard will be given chances to prove himself on the pitch. Caballero was picked ahead of Kepa against Leicester City by Lampard and that can be expected again in the coming games.
The belief is that getting a solid backup can push Kepa to work harder and get the best out of him. Barcelona opted for a similar tactic when Marc-Andrรฉ ter Stegen was not at his best and they brought in Jasper Cillessen to challenge him.
