Roman Abramovich disqualified by Premier League – How does this affect Chelsea?

Premier League have disqualified Roman Abramovich as a director at Chelsea, they announced in a statement on Saturday.

The move comes days after the United Kingdom government sanctioned the Russian oligarch and six others. Premier League statement now blocks Roman from making any decisions related to the club. 

“Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League Board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club. The Board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures, as set out under the terms of a licence issued by the Government which expires on 31 May 2022.”

How does this affect Chelsea FC?

The disqualification by Premier League would ideally force Roman Abramovich to sell the club he owns. However, that process is already underway and began even before the Government issued the sanction.

The sale process will remain unchanged, but the government sanction has given them the power to oversee the sale. Roman will have to apply for a new license to complete the sale of the club. 

Day-to-day operations at the club remain unchanged but under the restrictions set by the Government earlier this week.
