“It’s disappointing for me” – Mike Dean comments on Chelsea vs Tottenham controversy
Mike Dean has admitted he made a mistake by not asking Anthony Taylor to review the incident involving Marc Cucucrella and Cristian Romero. The VAR official claims it was a foul on the Chelsea defender, and it should have been a free kick to the home side.
Writing in his Daily Mail column, Dean claimed he has review the footage once again and acknowledged that it was supposed to be a freekick to Chelsea. The decision was not made during the game and Tottenham went on to score seconds later and walk away from Stamford Bridge with a point.
The former Premier League referee wrote:
“I’ve since studied the footage, spoken to other referees and, upon reflection, I should have asked Taylor to visit his pitch-side monitor to take a look for himself. The referee on field always has the final say. It goes to show that no matter how experienced you are, and I’ve spent more than two decades as a Premier League official, you are always learning. It’s disappointing for me as this was one incident in an otherwise very good weekend from our officials. Decisions are debated – that’s the life of a referee.”
