Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Enock Mwepu forced to retire
Brighton and Hove Albion have announced that Enock Mwepu has been forced to retire. The midfielder has been diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition.
The Premier League club have reported that the condition can worsen over time and put the Zambian star at a high risk of a fatal cardiac event.
Brighton chairman has commented on the shocking news and said:ย
โWe are all absolutely devastated for Enock. He and his family have had a traumatic few weeks and while we are just thankful he has come through that period, he has seen such a promising career cut short at such a young age. As a club we will give him all the love, help and support we possibly can to make a full recovery, and then as he decides on the next steps in his life.โ
Mwepu returned to England during the international break last month after falling unwell during a trip to Mali. He was hospitalized for four days in West Africa before returning to his club.
The Zambian star played six games in the Premier League this season and assisted once. He joined Brighton last summer from Red Bull Salzburg on a four-year deal.
