Olivier Giroud opens up about failed moves in January

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has revealed that he was prevented from leaving the club in January amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan and Lazio.

Giroud has struggled to break into Chelsea’s first team following the emergence of Tammy Abraham. With the Euro 2020 set to take place this year, the striker was told by France’s national team coach Didier Deschamps that he would need regular game time in order to be considered for selection.

As a result, the former Arsenal striker was on the lookout for a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer. According to reports, Tottenham were serious contenders for his signature but a move was ultimately ‘blocked’ by the Blues as Frank Lampard did not want to sell to an immediate rival.

Speaking to Telefoot, Giroud opened up about his failed January move:

“The most interesting for me was Inter Milan. The problem was that it dragged on. Lazio and Tottenham were there too, but I was blocked. I knew I shouldn’t go on strike, or go to sulk in the locker room. Because it wasn’t me, and because I knew there was a good chance I would stay at Chelsea.”

Giroud is now open to staying at Chelsea for another season if he is offered the right role.
