5 players Chelsea need to sell or release in 2020
Chelsea’s transfer ban decision will be out tonight or tomorrow but regardless of that, there are a few players the Blues need to let go of. These players are not going to add any value to the squad and are not going to be used often by Frank Lampard.
The best thing for the club to do would be the let them go and replace them with players who can challenge the starting XI or get into it straight away.
Without further ado, here are 5 players we think should be off Chelsea’s books in 2020:
#5 – Pedro
The Spaniard’s time at Chelsea is coming to an end. His contract expires at the end of the season and there is no chance of him getting a new deal at the club.
Lampard has enough wingers in his squad to replace the former Barcelona man. Moreover, with reports on Jadon Sancho being targetted, Pedro will have no chance of making it into the first team.
#4 – Marcos Alonso
Marcos Alonso is one player all the Chelsea fans would drive to the airport on their own. He was brilliant as a wing-back but as a left-back, he has been terrible.
The Spaniard is out of position most of the times and is a better attacker than a defender. He has cost them a lot of points and Lampard has not selected him in his recent match squads.
#3 – Danny Drinkwater
The reason why Chelsea signed Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City for £35 million will remain unknown. He was nowhere close to their quality and was a shock signing.
He’s now on loan at Aston Villa and the club have been trying to offload him for over a year now. Anything they get for him would be better than keeping him on their wage books.
#2 – Ross Barkley
The former Everton midfielder looked like a steal for £15 million but he has not managed to handle the pressure at all. He has no chance of getting into the starting XI now with Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho doing so well. N’Golo Kante is the first name on the teamsheet every game and is irreplaceable.
Chelsea could offer him in a deal to get a player like Ben Chilwell but it would be a surprise if Leicester City take him.
#1 – Willian
Another player whose contract is expiring at the end of the season is Willian. He has made it clear that he wants a new deal at the club and has assured that he won’t be talking to any club in January.
However, Willian is nowhere the kind of player Lampard needs in his squad right now. He started well but has not managed to maintain that level for some time now.
