Gianluca Di Marzio has highlighted a key reason why Xabi Alonso could reject the Chelsea offer despite holding talks.
Chelsea are keen to appoint Xabi Alonso as the next manager, and talks this week have progressed in the right direction. BlueCo were cautious in their approach, fearing a late Liverpool swoop, but the Reds are all but out, as things stand.
The Sportzine sources reported that talks between the Spaniard and the Blues entered the fourth round this week, and that gave them confidence that the 44-year-old will accept the role. They are keen to complete the appointment before the end of the month to start working on transfers as soon as possible.
There are fine details yet to be discussed, and Di Marzio believes the former Real Madrid manager should not accept the role unless he is given clarity.
Key details could block Xabi Alonso joining Chelsea
BlueCo are adamant that their project is heading in the right direction, and the managerial choices have been the issue. Reports this week have suggested that Alonso wants control over transfers at Chelsea.
Di Marzio has now told AceOdds that it could cause issues in the discussions, and said:
“I really don’t think that Xabi Alonso can or will accept an offer from Chelsea, because he knows what happened to Enzo Maresca when he was the manager. He knows that the board wants to have influence on the decisions, which normally is up to the manager. They want to decide which players should be substituted during a match and all that stuff, which Alonso can’t accept at all.”
However, Matt Law of The Telegraph has since reported that Chelsea are willing to give Alonso some control, and also sign 2-3 senior players this summer to help the squad.
